Why Mentoring Matters - A Conversation with Cycle Breaker Lorena Guerrero, MSW, LCSW

First-Generation Fridays – Martha Empowers Podcast released Episode #7 - “Why Mentoring Matters” with Cycle Breaker Lorraine (Lorena) Guerrero, MSW, LCSW, a Senior Trauma Therapist, and a recently elected public school board member in Joliet, IL.

Listen to the powerful and courageous story of how mentors impacted the life of Lorena as a first-generation college student and why she chose to be a cycle breaker, and a catalyst for change in her family and community.

I had the privilege of mentoring Lorena while a social work student at Lewis University. As a student leader looking for mentors in college, Lorena took every class and workshop I ever taught in social work. Over the years, our mentorship turned into a beautiful friendship supporting one another in our personal and professional lives. Lorena’s college journey is a true testament of why mentoring and representation matters for first-generation students in higher education.

Lorena considers herself a proud cycle breaker, individuals who disrupt and stop unhealthy family patterns breaking cycles of abuse passed down through generations which can be manifested as anything from unhealthy behaviors, to mental health issues, to disease. You become a cycle breaker when you first see the cycle and then decide that that cycle stops with you.

Lorena inspires her clients and community by sharing one of her favorite messages of hope -“Do the best you can, with what you have, where you are!”
