What Is TRiO and the Impact on First-Generation Students

Motivational Monday – The Martha Empowers Podcast releases Episode #10 “What Is TRiO?” a conversation with Mercedes Terrazas, M.Ed., a TRiO Student Support Specialist & Alumna at Joliet Junior College. 👐🏼

Listen and learn more about the federal education programs called TRiO, the first national access and retention program in the United States supporting first-generation students.

TRiO emerged out of the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964 and the 1965 Higher Education Act. 🎓

Earlier this month, on November 8th, we celebrated National First-Generation College Celebration Day to advance an asset-based national narrative on first-generation student experiences and accomplishments. 🎓

TRiO has impacted generations of students and families with essential educational opportunity programs promoting educational access, persistence, retention, graduation, and paving the way for diverse students in higher education. 🎓

Thank you - Muchas Gracias Mercedes for sharing the importance of TRiO and how first-generation students can access TRiO programs from elementary school through college! 🎓

If you need assistance with connecting with a TRiO program near you, please feel free to reach out to me: marthaempowers@gmail.com.
